  14. In 1972, Democratic presidential candidate George C. Wallace was shot and left paralyzed while campaigning at a Laurel, Md., shoppig center.  Wallace's assailant, Arthur Bremer, was sentenced to 63 years in prison, although the sentence was later reduced.
